Featuring hot water lakes, New Zealand’s largest mud volcano and the largest hot water waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, the Hells Gate Valley is the place to be for an indulgent experience that is almost sinful.

With the only geothermal mud baths in New Zealand, the Hell’s Gate Spa is a highly therapeutic experience. Experience how the nutrient rich water relaxes the body and our world famous mud gently exfoliates the skin while enjoying the views of the Geothermal Reserve. Relax in the warm geothermal mud before jumping in the sulphur pool – with minerals that help to clear and detoxify. This Maori owned valley is both beautiful and bizarre, almost interplanetary in nature, like a scene from Mars. The area is known as the fiercest area of geothermal activity and is steeped in ancient Maori culture, which you will discover when you visit.

Hell's Gate Geothermal Walk - allow 1.5hrs
Take a self guided walk or join a free interactive guided tour (conducted at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm daily) around Hell’s Gate – New Zealand’s most active geothermal park. This amazing landscape will captivate your imagination as it bubbles with heat and history. The complimentary Maori carving area lets you leave with a little piece of Maori culture.

Hell's Gate Sulphur Spa - allow 1.5hrs
Relax and rejuvenate in the geothermal hot pools at Hell's Gate. Naturally heated, these sulphur spas are renowned for their healing and restorative powers.

Hell's Gate Mud Bath & Spa - allow 2hrs
Relax in the Hells Gate Mud Bath, New Zealand's only mud spa complex and enjoy the Sulphur Spa for the ultimate relaxation.

Hell's Gate Experience - allow 3hrs
Combine all three of Hell's Gate most popular experiences. Join the guided or self guided interactive Geothermal Walk before indulging in Hells Gate Mud Bath & Sulphur Spa.

Opening Hours

• Open daily from 10 am - 6 pm (last entry at 4:30pm)
• Self drive to Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve & Mud Spa is located at 351 State Highway 30 (10 mins drive out of Rotorua)
• Operates all year

Other Information

• Child rate applies to 5-15yrs. Children under 5yrs are free of charge
• Free transfers are provided for all tours except the Geothermal walk which requires you to drive yourself to Hells Gate or pay a small fee to the shuttle driver (please note the shuttle service is currently unavailable)
