Greymouth is the largest town on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand with a population of just over 10,000 residents.
The area has a history of gold mining, which can be best appreciated at the local museum and nearby Shantytown.
The local Monteiths brewery produces some of the best beers in the country and it runs tours that include a tasting session. Other things to do in Greymouth include popular quad biking and ATV tours, sea and fly fishing, spectacular walks and hiking on the Elizabeth Track which passes through a scenic reserve and old goldmining sites.
The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, 45 km to the north are a popular local tourist attraction as is Hokitika 45kms to the south, while many also pass through on the route to or from Franz Josef and Fox glaciers.
