Most tourists that visit Milford wish to get out on the water and there are plenty of ways to experience this spectacular fiord. From two hour scenic cruises and sea kayaking to coach tours and flights from Queenstown and luxury overnight boat cruises. Which ever option you choose, its likely you will see playful dolphins and seals and more waterfalls than you could possibly imagine. The Fiord is approximately 16km from the ‘head’ to the open sea, which means visitors can comfortably travel the length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea and return in only 1½ to 2 hours.
Milford Sound is also home to an abundance of walking tracks including the world famous Milford Track, described as the finest walk in the world!
The road to Milford Sound is one of the world's finest alpine drives. From Te Anau the road winds down the Eglinton and Hollyford Valleys then through the Homer Tunnel to be met by Mitre Peak towering from the glassy waters of Milford Sound.
