Hi Claire, Whale Watching operates all year round in Kaikoura as it is one of the few locations in the world that are lucky enough to have sperm whales present all year due to the abundant food source in the area. However, while While sperm whales stay around all year, Kaikoura is also visited by many migrating whales, like humpback whales, pilot whales, blue whales and southern right whales. The whales leave Antarctic waters for the winter and head up to the tropics, stopping at Kaikoura on the way. For migrating whales, June and July are the best times to go.
